If you have been following the Stanton & Killeen journey for a while now, you may have a sense that at S&K, we like our wines to genuinely reflect our heritage, our site, our sustainability philosophy, and the season in which they were made.
The 2021 season was much cooler and wetter than an average year in Rutherglen. Traditionally, we would have made a Vintage Fortified or The Prince Iberian Blend from our Portuguese varieties, however it wasn’t the season to achieve the desired level of intensity and baumé for these wines. Instead, we grasped the opportunity to produce a new wine and tell a story that is close to our hearts.
After harvesting the grapes and processing the parcels with great care, we matured the wine in selected oak for 6 months. The goal for the wine was to be bright and juicy yet still express the power and complexity of these varieties. Terra Mãe means "motherland" – the wine represents the sun and the soil here at our Rutherglen property and the energy and the passion that our team pours into these amazing varieties. We say it’s a “sum of its parts” in that the final result is better than any of its individual elements – be it the grape varieties, the people involved, the season or our winemaking.
We worked with Claudia from Cloudy Co to design a label that reflects the textures, colours and historical elements of S&K. How many references can you spot? Some of the label designs were very literal and some were more abstract. In the end, we explored many different options, each beautiful and visually tactile.
Every growing year and vintage is different - and as such, each time we release the Terra Mãe, you might notice subtle changes to the label such as new patterns or colours. The 2021 label exhibits colours that we have experienced this year in Rutherglen – lush green growth, beautiful gold from the crops of wheat or canola, the terracotta of our rich, productive soils. The story of this wine is all about our commitment to the integrity of releasing wine reflective of our site and of each vintage.
Tasting Notes: Aged in oak for six months before bottling, this is a light-medium bodied wine to enjoy young and fresh. It will continue to develop and integrate in the bottle up for up to 5 years. Rich fruit of cherry and plum melds with soft spice and elegant tannins. Enjoy with grilled foods or a fragrant paella. For Tastes of Rutherglen festival in March 2022, Jan and Lonnie from Saludos have matched cured salmon with a smoked tomato crème fraîche and pickled onion to the Terra Mãe. It’s a very versatile wine and we hope you love it as much as we do!
